Egyptian Tax Authority and Cinema Industry Chamber Forge Alliance to Streamline Sector Governance
Egypt Rasha Abdel Aal, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA), held a strategic meeting with Hisham Abdel Khalek, Chairman of the Cinema Industry Chamber. The session, attended by ETA representatives and specialists in artistic and tax files related to cinematic activities, comes in implementation of directives from Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk to maintain continuous dialogue with various economic sectors, understand their challenges, and develop practical, balanced solutions.
During the meeting, Abdel Aal emphasized that cinematic and artistic production is a vital strategic industry, serving as a primary tool of Egypt’s soft power. She highlighted its significant role in shaping public awareness and culture, reinforcing the Egyptian identity, and driving the national economy by creating jobs and stimulating related industries and services.
Abdel Aal underscored the Ministry of Finance and the ETA’s commitment to supporting this dynamic sector by fostering a stable and transparent environment conducive to growth and continued regional leadership. She noted that the cinema industry has a unique nature that requires a precise understanding of its operational and production mechanisms.
Key Highlights from the Meeting:
Comprehensive Assessment: The ETA is dedicated to thoroughly studying the sector's dynamics and consulting all stakeholders before establishing any tax protocols or regulatory frameworks.
Governance and Balance: The Authority is currently working with industry representatives to draft clear governance mechanisms that balance safeguarding public treasury rights with providing a stable, transparent tax environment for filmmakers.
Voluntary Compliance: Upcoming technical discussions will focus on promoting voluntary tax compliance, streamlining procedures, and building bridges of trust with the business community.
On his part, Hisham Abdel Khalek expressed his appreciation for the Ministry's proactive approach to opening a direct dialogue with industry professionals. He emphasized that the intricate elements of the cinema sector—spanning production, distribution, and theatrical exhibition—require an in-depth understanding to formulate fair policies.
Abdel Khalek proposed the formation of a joint committee comprising representatives from the ETA and the Cinema Industry Chamber. This committee would aim to detail the sector's operational mechanisms, ultimately leading to policies that better align with the industry's realities.
He concluded by expressing great optimism about this collaborative phase, noting that the Chamber remains committed to protecting the industry and the interests of producers, distributors, and cinema owners alike, ensuring the sector's continued growth and evolution.
