Egypt’s Egypt Amoun Targets $5 Billion Green Ammonia Project in Strategic Energy Push

Egypt-based developer Egypt Amoun is planning to invest up to $5 billion in a large-scale green ammonia production project, reinforcing the country’s accelerating push into clean energy and export-oriented industrial development.

The project is expected to be implemented in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone, a strategic hub increasingly positioned as a regional center for green hydrogen and ammonia production, according to Asharq Business.

The investment aligns with Egypt’s broader ambition to capitalize on its renewable energy potential - particularly solar and wind - to produce green fuels for export markets, especially Europe, where demand for low-carbon alternatives is rising rapidly.

Green ammonia, derived from renewable hydrogen, is emerging as a key pillar in global decarbonization strategies, particularly in sectors such as shipping, fertilizers, and heavy industry. Egypt’s geographic location and infrastructure connectivity give it a competitive edge in supplying these markets.

The planned project by Egypt Amoun comes amid a growing pipeline of multi-billion-dollar clean energy investments in the country. Egypt has already attracted several major agreements in green hydrogen and ammonia, typically located near Ain Sokhna, with production capacities often targeting up to one million tons annually and export-oriented models.

Industry momentum has been supported by government incentives, streamlined licensing frameworks, and international partnerships aimed at accelerating project execution and attracting foreign capital.

The move underscores Egypt’s evolving role as a regional energy transition hub, as it seeks to move beyond traditional hydrocarbons and position itself at the forefront of the global green fuels market.
