Kaspersky Report: Over 1 Million Bank Accounts Compromised in 2025 as Cybercriminals Pivot to Info-Stealers

A groundbreaking report by Kaspersky reveals an unprecedented surge in cyber threats targeting the global financial sector, with more than one million online banking accounts breached in 2025. The data indicates a fundamental shift in criminal tactics; attackers are increasingly moving away from complex banking malware in favor of Infostealers and credential harvesting. By exploiting social engineering and digital user behavior, hackers are bypassing traditional defenses to seize login credentials, which are then traded on darknet markets to facilitate large-scale financial fraud.

The report highlights that while banks have fortified their core systems, cybercriminals are now targeting "softer" links, such as e-commerce platforms. In 2025, fake online store pages accounted for 48.5% of financial phishing attempts, significantly outperforming impersonations of banking services (26.1%) and payment systems (25.5%). This geographic and tactical diversification demonstrates a sophisticated adaptation by threat actors to the evolving digital habits of global consumers.
