Alibaba’s Qwen Dominates Global AI Landscape with Over 50% of Open-Source Downloads
Alibaba Cloud has cemented its position as a global AI powerhouse, with its Qwen model family now accounting for more than 50% of all open-source AI downloads worldwide. Recent data reveals that cumulative downloads for Qwen neared the 1 billion mark as of March, significantly outpacing prominent rivals such as Meta Platforms’ Llama and DeepSeek. The momentum was largely fueled by the release of the Qwen 3.5 series, which saw an unprecedented 153.6 million downloads in February alone—more than double the combined downloads of its next eight closest competitors, including OpenAI. Industry experts suggest that this "viral expansion" is a result of Alibaba’s strategic focus on accessibility and high-performance capabilities that rival leading U.S. models.
