bp Announces New Gas Discovery Offshore Egypt, Leveraging Existing Infrastructure to Accelerate Production

Global energy major bp has announced a new gas discovery in the East Mediterranean following the successful drilling of the West Denis-1 exploration well. Located within the Temsah concession, approximately 70 kilometers offshore, the discovery encountered approximately 90 meters of high-quality gas-bearing sandstone. Due to its proximity—less than 10 kilometers—to existing processing facilities, bp and its partners are poised to fast-track development to support Egypt's domestic energy needs.

The discovery follows the 2025 framework agreement to extend the Temsah concession for another 20 years, highlighting the strategic importance of this basin. bp holds a 50% stake alongside Eni, which operates the Denis development through the Petrobel joint venture. This milestone is part of a broader intensification of bp’s Egyptian operations, which includes the recent deployment of the DS-12 drillship to execute a multi-well deepwater drilling campaign, further cementing bp’s 63-year legacy as a cornerstone of Egypt’s energy sector.
