Global Helium Shortage Threatens Semiconductor Production as South Korea’s Reserves Dwindle to 60 Days

The global semiconductor industry is facing a critical supply chain disruption as a severe helium shortage reaches a breaking point. South Korea, a global hub for chip manufacturing, has warned that its national helium reserves have dropped to levels sufficient for only two months of production. The crisis escalated following a declaration of "Force Majeure" by Qatar—one of the world’s largest suppliers—combined with logistical bottlenecks in the Strait of Hormuz, effectively removing one-third of the global supply from the market.

Helium is indispensable in semiconductor fabrication for precision cooling and leak detection within ultra-pure environments. Industry giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are reportedly scrambling to secure emergency shipments from the United States despite surging costs. Analysts warn that if supply lines remain unstable, the tech sector could see a repeat of the 2021 chip crisis, leading to widespread shortages and price hikes for consumer electronics worldwide.
