Egypt and Cyprus Strengthen Energy Alliance at EGYPES 2026; First Gas Shipments Expected by 2028
In a high-level ministerial session at the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026), Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Eng. Karim Badawi, alongside Cypriot Energy Minister Michael Damianos and EU Energy Director-General Ditte Juul Jørgensen, reaffirmed the strategic roadmap for East Mediterranean gas. The session followed the signing of a landmark framework agreement aimed at connecting Cypriot gas fields to Egypt’s extensive processing infrastructure for domestic use and re-export to Europe.
Minister Badawi emphasized that securing energy supplies for millions of Egyptians remains the "absolute priority," while Minister Damianos revealed that Cyprus—holding approximately 20 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas reserves—plans to commence exports from the Cronos field to Egypt by 2028. This partnership is viewed by the European Commission as a vital pillar for Europe’s energy diversification strategy, especially as the EU continues to expand its import infrastructure and balance global supply-demand dynamics.
