Google Bolsters ”Results About You” Tool to Combat Identity Theft and Digital Fraud
In a major push for user privacy, Google has announced a significant update to its “Results about you” tool, allowing users to scrub sensitive personal identifiers from search results. The expansion enables the removal of highly confidential data, including passport numbers, driver’s licenses, and Social Security numbers (SSNs), alongside previously supported info like home addresses and phone numbers.
This move comes as a response to the alarming rise in cyber-fraud; Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data shows millions of identity theft reports annually, leading to massive financial and legal repercussions for victims. Beyond financial loss, Google’s update addresses the "human cost" of data leaks, such as fraudulent medical claims or identity-based legal complications. The tool now also features an accelerated mechanism for reporting non-consensual sensitive imagery, with proactive filters to prevent future reappearances of such content in Search.
