Egypt’s FRA Grants Telda Consumer Finance License to Boost Fintech-Driven Financial Inclusion

Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) has approved a license for fintech startup Telda to operate in the consumer finance sector, marking a new step toward accelerating digital transformation in non-banking financial services.

The approval was issued by the FRA’s committee responsible for reviewing fintech applications in non-banking financial activities, in line with the regulator’s strategy to support technology-driven business models and expand access to financial services across the Egyptian market.

The move is expected to enhance financial inclusion by enabling a broader segment of consumers to benefit from digital financing solutions, while encouraging innovation within the fintech ecosystem.

According to FRA Chairman Decree No. 3060 of 2023, the Companies Establishment and Licensing Committee is tasked with approving the incorporation and licensing of firms operating in non-banking financial activities under the Authority’s supervision. The committee also oversees amendments to company bylaws, incentive frameworks, and has the authority to review decisions related to capital markets and consumer finance companies.

Its mandate further includes approving requests for adding new activities, changing legal frameworks, opening or relocating branches, and handling liquidation or temporary suspension requests, as well as registering and deregistering company promoters.

Telda, a fast-growing fintech startup, currently offers a digital financial app that enables users to manage payments, transfers, and prepaid cards. With the newly granted consumer finance license, the company is set to expand its offerings to include installment plans and digital lending solutions in Egypt.
