Elon Musk Reignites Debate Over Simulation Theory with Viral Video
Elon Musk has sparked widespread debate across social media after revisiting the idea that the universe we inhabit could be an advanced digital simulation.
Musk shared a video from the The Why Files titled “Are We Living in a Simulation?”, which explores the hypothesis that reality may be a complex digital system resembling video games—but on a cosmic scale.
Commenting on the video, Musk noted that he had previously discussed the concept during a dinner with a prominent physicist and a leading computer scientist. According to him, one estimated the probability that we are living in a simulation at 0%, while the other placed it at 100%, describing the debate as “akin to the Double-slit experiment—but with humans.”
The Simulation Theory suggests that reality may not be as it appears, but instead could be a highly advanced digital construct created by a more technologically sophisticated civilization. Under this framework, everything humans perceive—from the laws of physics to consciousness itself—could be part of an intricate programmed system, similar to video game environments but far more complex.
Although there is no conclusive scientific evidence supporting this hypothesis, interest in the idea has grown alongside rapid advances in artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies. This has prompted a broader discussion among scientists, philosophers, and technologists.
Some proponents also draw connections between Simulation Theory and the Double-slit experiment, which demonstrates that particles such as electrons behave like waves when unobserved but exhibit particle-like behavior when measured. This phenomenon has been interpreted—though not scientifically proven—as suggesting that reality may not be fixed, but instead becomes defined upon observation, similar to how digital systems render data only when needed.
