AWS Launches Amazon Connect Health to Automate Administrative Tasks in Healthcare

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of a new platform called Amazon Connect Health, designed to help healthcare organizations automate repetitive administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, patient data verification, medical documentation, and the review of medical histories and coding of clinical cases.

The platform is fully compliant with the requirements of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for protecting health data and supports integration with electronic health record systems (EHR), allowing it to be deployed directly within hospitals’ and physicians’ existing workflows without requiring major infrastructure changes.

Current partnerships supporting the platform include providers of electronic health record software, data integration services, and patient engagement management solutions.

The launch forms part of AWS’s growing investments in the U.S. healthcare sector, which is estimated to be worth around $5 trillion. The company has previously introduced several healthcare-focused solutions, including Amazon Comprehend Medical for processing unstructured medical data, Amazon HealthLake for FHIR-compliant healthcare data infrastructure, and HealthOmics to support biological data workflows.

A key feature of Amazon Connect Health is its ability to run AI agents capable of performing complex tasks on behalf of humans within a secure regulatory framework. This represents one of the first major deployments of AI agents in an environment compliant with healthcare regulations.

Current capabilities include automated patient identity verification and document preparation, while upcoming features will include appointment scheduling, patient insight extraction, medical coding, and additional administrative tools.

The service is priced at $99 per user per month, covering up to 600 cases per month, which is sufficient for most primary care physicians who typically handle around 300 cases monthly.

The launch comes amid a broader push by major technology companies to reduce administrative burdens on healthcare professionals through artificial intelligence. Similar initiatives include ChatGPT Health from OpenAI and Claude for Healthcare from Anthropic, both focusing on providing AI-powered tools within healthcare workflows while maintaining strict data privacy compliance.

AWS’s new platform offers healthcare institutions an opportunity to adopt AI-driven solutions that improve operational efficiency and reduce time spent on administrative procedures, allowing medical professionals to focus more on patient care.
