Egypt Aims to Deliver Seamless Digital Government Services to Citizens, Says ICT Minister
Dr. Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, affirmed that successful national strategies place citizens at their core, stressing that Egypt’s digital transformation agenda aims to deliver government services to citizens in a simplified, automated, and well-governed manner.
His remarks came during his participation in a panel discussion held as part of Siemens’ celebration marking 125 years of operations in Egypt, attended by senior Egyptian and German officials, including H.E. Eng. Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, German Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Rouenhoff, and Dr. Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG.
Dr. Talaat explained that the Ministry has invested approximately USD 6 billion in developing Egypt’s digital infrastructure through parallel efforts in fixed broadband and mobile services. He noted that nearly 20,000 government buildings have been connected to the national fiber-optic network, in addition to extending fiber infrastructure to villages under the Haya Karima initiative across the country.
He emphasized that digital transformation is a means rather than an end, serving as a key pillar of Egypt’s Digital Vision to enhance the efficiency of government performance, simplify procedures, and improve the quality of public services.
The Minister highlighted that Egypt’s average fixed internet speed has more than doubled over the past seven and a half years, placing the country first in Africa. He also pointed out that the Ministry aims to increase the number of mobile towers to 40,000 by the end of 2028.
Dr. Talaat further referenced the signing of the largest spectrum allocation deal in Egypt’s telecommunications history, through agreements with the four mobile operators to allocate 410 MHz, an amount equivalent to all spectrum allocated over the past three decades combined.
He underscored the role of digital technologies in improving the safety and efficiency of the transport sector, noting that both transport and industry have witnessed significant progress thanks to the adoption of information technology.
