GS1 Egypt Concludes First Phase of Nationwide Pharmaceutical Track-and-Trace Training Initiative
GS1 Egypt has successfully concluded the first phase of a specialized training program aimed at qualifying pharmaceutical sector professionals for the implementation of Egypt’s drug track-and-trace system, as part of ongoing preparations to roll out the system across the local market.
The four-day program marks the initial phase of a comprehensive plan targeting the training and qualification of 10,000 professionals working in the pharmaceutical sector. The initiative is designed to enhance the readiness and operational efficiency of pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers in applying the national drug traceability system.
The training brought together representatives from around 150 pharmaceutical companies, including the country’s largest 100 drug manufacturers and 50 importing companies, encompassing both local and multinational firms. Participants included major Egyptian pharmaceutical companies such as Medical Union Pharmaceuticals, Pharco, EIPICO, and Al-Nasr, alongside global players including AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Servier, Johnson & Johnson, and Roche.
The program focused on providing in-depth coverage of all aspects related to the drug track-and-trace system, including technical and regulatory requirements, practical implementation mechanisms within factories and companies, and GS1’s role as a global standards organization. It also highlighted internationally recognized GS1 standards used to secure pharmaceutical supply chains worldwide and their importance in ensuring product authenticity and patient safety.
In addition, the training offered a detailed explanation of how the track-and-trace system will be implemented in Egypt, supported by extensive practical sessions. These included simulated operational scenarios and comprehensive discussions addressing technical and regulatory inquiries, with the aim of unifying understanding and minimizing potential challenges during the implementation phase.
GS1 Egypt noted that the training content was specifically designed to accommodate companies of varying sizes - large, medium, and small - ensuring broad applicability and maximizing technical and operational readiness across the sector.
The organization confirmed that the program achieved strong engagement from participating companies, adding that the positive outcomes prompted several firms to request expanded training programs in the next phase. Other companies also expressed readiness to contribute to the delivery and expansion of future training efforts, in support of the nationwide rollout of the system.
At the conclusion of the program, GS1 Egypt awarded completion certificates to all participants who successfully fulfilled the training requirements and acquired the necessary knowledge related to the drug track-and-trace project. The initiative represents a key step toward supporting a structured and effective transition to full implementation of the system within Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector.
