WTDC-25: Egypt Leads Adoption of UN Resolution on AI Technologies in Telecommunication Development
Egypt, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), has successfully led the adoption of a United Nations resolution on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in telecommunication development during the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The resolution, submitted by Egypt, was formally adopted following more than ten days of intensive negotiations held across 12 dedicated sessions. It represents a significant step toward strengthening the role of artificial intelligence in advancing global telecommunication development, with a particular emphasis on supporting developing countries.
Under the resolution, the Telecommunication Development Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-D) will provide technical assistance and capacity-building support in the field of information and communication technologies to ITU Member States. The initiative places special focus on enabling developing countries to harness AI technologies to accelerate digital transformation and inclusive growth.
During WTDC-25, the Egyptian delegation presented the draft resolution, outlining its objectives, key pillars, and expected positive impact on both the ITU and its Member States. Egypt also played a central role in addressing concerns raised by several regional groups and countries that had expressed reservations, providing detailed clarifications and engaging in constructive dialogue prior to the resolution’s official adoption as a binding recommendation.
In parallel, Egypt led negotiations to ensure the inclusion of artificial intelligence as a core topic within the agenda of Study Group 2 on Digital Transformation. Egypt is set to chair this study group during the ITU operational plan for the 2026–2029 period, further reinforcing its leadership role in shaping global digital policy discussions.
This achievement underscores Egypt’s growing regional and international leadership in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as its active and influential participation within international organizations, particularly the International Telecommunication Union. It also highlights Egypt’s ability to mobilize broad regional and international support for the priorities of developing countries and its commitment to contributing effectively to the future of the global digital economy.
