NTRA Warns Mobile Users in Egypt of Advanced Cyber Intrusion Attempts Exploiting Newly Discovered Vulnerabilities
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), through the National Computer Emergency Response Team (EG-CERT), has issued an advisory following confirmed reports from Google and Apple regarding advanced mobile intrusion attempts targeting users across more than 150 countries, including Egypt.
According to initial findings, cyber attackers are exploiting previously undisclosed vulnerabilities, in addition to distributing malicious links and deceptive messages designed to mimic trusted entities or service providers. These attacks aim to compromise devices and gain unauthorized access to personal data without user awareness.
Security Guidance for All Mobile Users
The NTRA urged all citizens to enhance their device security practices, emphasizing that regular system and application updates remain the first and most critical layer of defense against exploitation. Security patches issued by manufacturers frequently address vulnerabilities that could otherwise be leveraged by attackers. Users are strongly encouraged to activate automatic updates whenever possible to ensure devices remain protected.
The authority also advised users to leverage advanced security features available on modern smartphones, including Lockdown Mode on iPhones and enhanced security settings on Android devices, which can significantly reduce exposure to targeted spyware or surveillance tools.
Users are strongly advised to exercise caution when handling links, messages, and attachments, especially those originating from unknown contacts or displaying unusual behavior. Many cyber attacks rely on impersonation and social engineering to deceive users into clicking malicious content.
To further strengthen device safety, the NTRA recommends the use of secure browsers, ad-blocking tools, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) on critical accounts such as email and social media. These measures help prevent unauthorized access even if a password is compromised.
Mobile users should remain alert to any suspicious device behavior, including unexpected slowdowns, abnormal data usage, or the appearance of unfamiliar applications, as these may indicate potential device compromise.
Ongoing National Monitoring and Response
The NTRA confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with global technology partners and national cybersecurity agencies, and will continue to implement necessary measures to ensure the protection of mobile users in Egypt.
