Samsung Marks 40 Years of Appliance Innovation with AI-Powered Future at IFA 2025

Samsung Electronics is celebrating four decades of appliance innovation, showcasing how its products have evolved from early microwave ovens with built-in TVs to today’s cutting-edge Bespoke AI lineup. At IFA 2025, Europe’s largest home appliance exhibition held in Berlin from September 5-9, the company unveiled its vision for the future under the theme “AI Home: Future Living, Now.”

The showcase highlights Samsung’s journey from pioneering voice-enabled refrigerators in the 1980s to introducing AI-powered appliances that deliver highly personalized solutions.

From Talking Refrigerators to Voice-Connected Homes
Samsung entered the voice-enabled appliance market in 1985 with the world’s first “Talking Refrigerator.” By 1989, enhanced with speech synthesis technology, it introduced features such as scheduled playback, family memos, and door-open alerts. This early experimentation laid the groundwork for Bixby, Samsung’s AI voice assistant launched in 2018, which now acts as the intelligence hub across a wide range of connected appliances.

Screens Become the Heart of the Smart Home
Samsung has also led in merging screens with appliances, starting with a microwave oven in 1982 that allowed users to watch TV and monitor security cameras. This vision matured with the Family Hub refrigerator in 2016, which integrated a 21.5-inch touchscreen and IoT connectivity, enabling users to manage groceries and link seamlessly to SmartThings, Samsung’s smart home platform.

AI-Powered Evolution of Everyday Appliances
Innovation continued with appliances like the Neuro-Fuzzy washing machine in 1991, which used sensors and algorithms to optimize wash cycles. More recently, Samsung introduced AI-powered laundry solutions such as the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, capable of detecting fabrics and soil levels to deliver tailored washing and drying cycles. The company also advanced robotic cleaning, with its Hauzen vacuum in 2006 paving the way for the AI-driven Bespoke Jet Bot Combo.

Showcasing the Future at IFA 2025
At IFA 2025, Samsung presented its most advanced lineup yet, designed to transform households into intelligent ecosystems that adapt to individual lifestyles.

“Based on Samsung’s legacy of innovation, we will continue to deliver greater convenience and value in users’ daily lives,” said Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team at Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances Business. “By setting a new standard for personalized AI Home experiences, we aim to further solidify the idea that Samsung equals AI appliances.”
