Hassan Abdalla named CBE governor for third term

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has renewed Hassan Abdalla’s mandate as acting governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) for a third consecutive term, according to a presidential decree issued on Monday.
His one-year appointment runs from 18 August 2025 to 17 August 2026.
Abdalla, who also serves as Egypt’s governor at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is overseeing preparations for the fund’s fifth and sixth reviews of the country’s $8 billion loan programme, expected in December.
First appointed in August 2022 following the resignation of Tarek Amer, Abdalla has steered monetary policy through a period of severe economic pressure marked by inflation, a shortage of US dollars and shrinking reserves.
The CBE reported reserves had climbed to more than $49 billion by the end of July, a record high.
A veteran of the banking sector, Abdalla spent decades at the Arab African International Bank, where he rose to CEO and vice-chairman.
He has held board positions at the CBE, the Egyptian Exchange, and several international financial institutions, and briefly chaired United Media Services.
He studied and later taught at the American University in Cairo (AUC), where he earned both his bachelor’s and MBA degrees.
