African startups have raised more than $2 billion since the start of 2026 through last week, excluding exits, according to the latest data from Africa: The Big Deal. Preliminary figures indicate that total funding could approach $3 billion by year-end.

Funding Crosses $2 Billion in September

African startup funding crossed the $2 billion mark in September, only weeks after the same threshold was reached in August in both 2025 and 2023. In contrast, the African market had to wait until December 2024 to surpass $2 billion.

The timing of the 2026 milestone points to continued capital flows into African startups, although September’s figures remain preliminary because not all deals and monthly data have been finalized.

Reaching the threshold in September does not represent the month’s final total, as the figures may be revised as new deals are announced or previously reported transactions have their values updated. The comparison therefore remains subject to change once the full September data are available.

June and August Among the Strongest Funding Months

June was one of the strongest funding months of 2026, with startups raising $515 million. Funding recorded in August reached about $455 million, making both months notable periods for startup financing across Africa this year.

September’s pace, based on currently available figures, does not yet appear sufficient to match the high levels recorded in June and August. However, the final picture for the month will depend on completed data, including deals that may be announced or have their values updated later.

The monthly figures available so far provide an initial view of the market’s funding trajectory during 2026, but they do not yet establish the year’s final total as the database continues to be updated with newly reported transactions.

Funding Outlook for 2026

The current data indicate that total African startup funding in 2026 could approach $3 billion. That level remains an estimate based on the funding trajectory recorded so far and is not a final figure for the year.

The comparison with previous years highlights differences in when the $2 billion threshold was reached. The market crossed it in August in 2023 and 2025, while 2024 did not pass the mark until December. In 2026, the threshold was reached in September.

Complete September data are expected to provide a clearer picture of third-quarter market performance, including funding volume, deal count and distribution across African sectors and markets. These details have not yet been finalized in the preliminary data.

Africa: The Big Deal’s data cover a database of more than 2,600 African startups that have raised at least $100,000 since 2019. The database tracks more than $25 billion in total investments across the companies listed. The funding figures exclude exits and focus on capital raised by startups, with the database updated monthly to add new deals and revise data when additional information becomes available.
