The Canadian city of Toronto has transformed into one of North America's premier hubs for artificial intelligence talent and technology. This evolution is driven by a decades-long academic legacy, mounting investments from major tech corporations, and a vibrant startup ecosystem that attracts talent and capital from both within Canada and abroad.
Toronto's ascent in the AI landscape is closely tied to Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton. In the 1980s, Hinton chose to pursue his machine learning research at the University of Toronto during a time when the field garnered significantly less interest than it does today.
Hinton’s pioneering research helped lay the crucial foundations for the technologies powering modern AI systems, while his academic presence has drawn generations of researchers and students to the city.
Tech Giants Bolster Their Presence in Toronto
Today, Toronto boasts a rapidly expanding ecosystem of AI enterprises. Major tech giants, including Google, Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft, have established offices and research labs within the city or in close proximity to the University of Toronto.
Companies outside the traditional tech sector are also investing heavily in the local AI ecosystem. Notably, pharmaceutical company Sanofi announced an investment of approximately $294 million this year to expand its AI Center of Excellence in Toronto, aiming to accelerate innovation in healthcare.
The city reaps the benefits of specialized academic and research institutions, most notably the University of Toronto and the Vector Institute, which Hinton co-founded to champion the development and commercialization of AI innovations.
North America's Third-Best Tech Talent Market
Toronto secured the third spot in CBRE’s latest North American tech talent rankings, trailing only the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle, and outpacing the New York region.
According to CBRE data, Toronto added roughly 75,000 tech jobs between 2022 and 2025—representing the largest surge among all North American tech talent markets over that timeframe. Furthermore, the size of the city's tech workforce has grown by approximately 26.5% since 2022.
The report's findings indicate that Toronto harbors a massive pool of specialized AI professionals. Together, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver account for roughly 60% of Canada's entire AI talent base.
