US Tech Coalition Urges Trump Administration Against Restricting Open-Source AI Models
Amid rising concerns over the rapid progress of Chinese artificial intelligence developers, a coalition of top U.S. technology companies—including Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, and Palantir—has urged President Donald Trump's administration not to impose restrictions on open-source AI models. The group warned that limiting open models could undermine American innovation and grant a strategic advantage to foreign competitors.
The plea was presented in an open letter signed alongside prominent venture capital firms and tech enterprises. The signatories called on policymakers to maintain a competitive ecosystem that fosters open-source AI development and to avoid premature regulations that could hamper technological progress.
Notably, leading companies that primarily rely on closed-source AI models—such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google—did not sign the letter.
U.S. Concerns Over Accelerating Chinese AI Progress
The open letter comes as debate intensifies within the United States regarding the narrowing technological gap between the two superpowers. U.S. industry anxiety spiked following Chinese startup Moonshot AI's release of its Kimi K3 model, raising concerns that China is rapidly closing ground in an AI race increasingly seen as a pillar of national security and economic leadership.
