Mastercard Strengthens Virtual Card Platform with New Security Features for Business Payments

Mastercard has introduced a series of enhancements to its commercial virtual card platform, adding new security controls and payment management capabilities designed to simplify business-to-business transactions while giving companies greater control over how virtual cards are used.

The latest upgrades allow card issuers to apply security rules when a virtual card is created, including spending limits, transaction restrictions, validity periods and merchant-specific controls. The new features are intended to reduce fraud risks and help businesses enforce payment policies throughout the transaction lifecycle.

Mastercard has also expanded its Clearing Controls capabilities, enabling organizations to validate transactions beyond the initial authorization stage. The enhancements allow businesses to block invalid transactions, manage payment timing more effectively and apply centralized policies across large-scale payment programs.

In addition, the company has introduced a single API connection that provides access to its growing embedded payments network, allowing enterprises, financial institutions and technology platforms to integrate virtual card services more easily without building multiple connections for different partners.

The new capabilities are designed to support the growing adoption of virtual cards in corporate payments, where businesses are increasingly seeking automated, secure and flexible payment solutions for procurement, supplier payments and expense management. Mastercard said the enhancements help reduce operational complexity while improving security and payment efficiency across commercial transactions.
